Henschke Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon 1998 Eden Valley, South Australia Australia
HenschkeAbout the Winery
This single vineyard Cabernet was named after the Late Cyril Henschke who acquired this Eden Valley property in the 1970s. It now involves little components of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Soils are very much depleted with sandy topsoils over rock and patches of mud. Early vintages were halfway barrel aged and developed in American oak. These days the wine – after vinification in headed down open fermenters – finishes maturation and 18 months development in 100% new French oak: mainly Vosges, Alliers and Berce. The style has lived up to expectations truly a development – the wines indicate more artfulness and parity than any time in recent memory. Cyril Henschke Cabernet is an exceptionally perfumed wine with exceptional immaculate blackcurrant cedar substantial characters, fine grained tannins and appetizing/vanillin oak complexity. Andrew Caillard MW The Henschke name is maybe better known for the Hill of Grace, however chief red is one that since the 1981 vintage has stood head and shoulders above most other Australian cabernet-based wines. From the Eden Valley comes this wine of incredible profundity and style which grows along the exemplary cedar and cigarbox lines of top Medoc reds in ripe years.
